The Montessori School of Donelson offers a thorough educational and developmental program for children age six weeks to 6 years. During summer months, a summer camp style atmosphere comes to life with school-age children up to age 12. The school serves about 65 students annually.
The NIDO Environment
The Nido (Italian for "nest") environment provides quality care for a maximum of ten infants, ages two months to sixteen months. The carefully prepared Montessori environment presents a home like setting in which the children are assisted in their developmental process by stimulation of the five senses, encouragement of gross and fine motor control, and introduction of self-help skills at an individual pace.
The Pre-Primary Environment
Children leave the Nido and enter Pre-Primary between twelve and sixteen months, or when they are securely walking. The Montessori environment for these young toddlers is carefully prepared to aid them in achieving independence, social interaction with other children, development of language skills, cooking, music and movement activities are stressed.
"Casa dei Bambini" or "The Children's House"
Children may enter the Casa at two-and-a-half years of age. The prepared environment consists of a full range of Montessori materials and trained Guides. However, the prepared environment is more than materials; it involves the careful coordination of space, people and time as well as the selection of activities and materials. The way in which these elements are combined will vary according to the stage of development. Yet this environment provides full opportunities for individual development within the context of a social community.
